An Invitation to Compete
An Invite-Only International Masters Basketball Team (Over 50)
First things first: one team. One tournament. Done right.
We’re forming a small, invite-only Over-50 Masters basketball team with the immediate goal of competing at Santander Masters in Spain. June 5-7, 2026.
Where Santander Is
(And Why It Works So Well for Masters Basketball)
Santander is a coastal city in northern Spain, on the Bay of Biscay, about:
1 hour from Bilbao
4 hours north of Madrid
It’s known for:
walkable city layout
beaches and waterfront promenades
affordable late dinners and relaxed evenings
strong local basketball culture
This is not a resort bubble.
It’s a real Spanish city that hosts serious basketball well.
Potential Other Tournaments Down The Line
Other events — including Galway Masters, Dublin Masters, Venice, Dubrovnik, Prague, and tournaments affiliated with Masters Basketball Tournaments — are aspirational, not guaranteed.
Right now, the work is simple and serious:
build the right team — and show up properly.
Why Santander? (And Why Your Spouse Will Thank You)”
Santander isn’t a tournament location. It’s a destination. This is northern Spain’s most elegant coastal city—think San Sebastián without the crowds, Biarritz without the attitude. Belle Epoque palaces line the bay. Michelin-starred restaurants serve €20 meals. The beaches are Atlantic-cool and stunning. Bilbao and the Guggenheim are an hour away. For players: You’ll compete in a legitimate international tournament with teams from across Europe—serious basketball, well-organized, in a city that takes the sport seriously. For partners who come: This is not a “sit by the hotel pool while he plays” trip. Santander is walkable, safe, and cultured. Your days are yours—beach mornings, pintxos afternoons, maybe a day trip to Bilbao. You meet up for late dinners (Spanish style) when the games end.For partners who stay home: This is the easiest “guys trip” to say yes to. He’s not going to Vegas. He’s not fishing in the wilderness. He’s playing ball in a refined, safe European city with actual culture—and coming back with stories worth hearing.
“The Schedule: Basketball + Actual Vacation”
Thursday, June 4: Arrive, settle in, team dinner at a local sidrería (cider house)Friday, June 5: Morning shootaround. Afternoon—your time. Beach, explore, or rest. Evening game.Saturday, June 6: Tournament play. Win or lose, the evening is the social event—teams from Germany, Spain, Italy mixing at local taverns. This is the Masters basketball culture.Sunday, June 7: Final games, awards, late lunch. Most guys stay through Monday—Bilbao, the Rioja wine region, or just one more perfect Santander evening. The basketball is the reason. The long weekend in Spain is the reward.
Wives and Partners’ Section
A Note for Spouses and PartnersIf you’re reading this because he sent you the link: we get it. “Basketball tournament in Spain” sounds like an excuse for a guys’ trip. Here’s what this actually is: A long weekend in a legitimate European destination where he’ll be occupied for roughly 6 hours on Friday and Saturday. The rest is yours—together or separate.Santander is Spain’s best-kept secret for travelers who want culture without chaos. The city center is compact and safe. The food scene rivals Barcelona at half the price. The beaches are beautiful and uncrowded in early June.If you come: You’ll have company—other partners often travel, and there’s a natural social circle. Or go solo and explore. The tournament schedule leaves huge windows. If you don’t: He’ll be in a real city, not a sports complex in the middle of nowhere. And he’ll return with actual stories, not just bar tabs.Questions? Ask us. We’ve done this before.
REVISE: “The Investment” (Reframe “Self-Funded”)
What It Costs (And What It Includes)This is self-funded—no markup, no middleman. You book your own flights and hotel (we recommend where to stay). Tournament entry is roughly €X per player. For context: A long weekend in Santander costs less than a weekend in Miami. The flight to Bilbao is often cheaper than flying cross-country in the U.S. And you’re getting international competition in a UNESCO-recognized city. This is a vacation with a basketball problem. Not the other way around.
This Is Not for Everyone
(And That’s the Point)

First Vintage Basketball Team at Galway Masters
This is not:
a reunion team
pickup basketball with travel jerseys
nostalgia disguised as competition
And it’s not built around talk.
This team is for doers — people who decide, prepare, and follow through.
If you’re the kind of person who texts “we should get together sometime” and means eventually, this probably isn’t a fit. If you want 2026 to be the year you put this on the calendar and have an athletic goal to increase your fitness, joy, adventure and health… this could be you.
What This Is
This is a serious but social Masters basketball team:
competitive on the court
organized and intentional
enjoyable to travel with
We take the basketball seriously.
We enjoy each other afterward.
Yes — there are beers. With our team and also in a very collegial atmosphere with the opposition.
Plural beers.
Wives and partners are welcome.
So is independent travel.
This is adult competition, handled like adults.
Who This Is For
This team is for men over 50 who:
Still play — or
Used to play at a high level and are willing to train back into proper shape
And who:
understand team basketball
value preparation and reliability
have the freedom and finances to travel
care about how they represent the game
Talent matters.
So does honesty about where you are today — and whether you’re willing to do the work.
The Standard
We operate with a European-style club mindset — calm, clear, and non-negotiable:
Show up prepared, or actively preparing
Defend, space the floor, move the ball
Accept roles without ego or drama
Respect referees, opponents, and hosts
Carry yourself well — on and off the court and leave politics at home.
We are looking for ambassadors, not agitators.
This is not a place for:
constant ref-baiting
attention-seeking behavior
chaos disguised as competitiveness
The goal is simple:
Be the team people respect — even when they don’t enjoy playing you.
Commitment & Logistics
This is a self-funded team.
Players cover:
travel
lodging
tournament fees
shared team expenses
The team provides:
leadership and organization
clear communication
roster decisions
preparation for international competition
Roster spots are limited and intentional.
Commitment matters. Here is the official Santander Spain Masters Basketball website.
How Selection Works
This is not an open tryout.
Selection considers:
basketball skill and feel
current fitness or a credible plan to get there
reliability and availability
emotional maturity
fit with the group
Not résumés.
Not stories.
Present reality — and near-term trajectory.
A short waitlist will be maintained.
The Question
No one needs to play basketball at this stage of life.
Which makes the choice to compete —
to train, travel, and commit —
a meaningful one.
How do you want to show up for the game now?
Next Step
If this resonates — for you, or for someone you know — the next step is simple:
Start a quiet conversation. Text me your questions and let’s set up a time to talk.
We’ll align on expectations, readiness, and fit.
If appropriate, a roster seat will be offered.
No pressure.
No hype.
No chasing.
