Being a parent of a basketball player is no easy feat. Whether you are a basketball mom or dad, it is important that you are there to support your son or daughter in the best way possible. Positive coaching techniques focus on the athletes’ strengths, rather than weaknesses, offering constructive feedback and support while setting achievable goals with clear guidelines on how to achieve them. Such an approach helps to build trust between player and coach, improves communication channels and encourages teamwork by providing individualized programs based around each athlete’s needs. It increases motivation levels by highlighting successes more than mistakes as well as providing career guidance beyond sports such as developing life skills like leadership, determination and resilience.

It’s no secret that the sport of basketball requires a great deal of physical activity. As parents, it’s important to ensure that your child is taking all necessary steps to prioritize their physical health and wellness. While there are many things you can do to help them reach their performance goals on the court, here are some ways you can prioritize their physical health and well-being while they prepare for their upcoming season.

From monitoring sleep patterns and ensuring proper nutrition, to scheduling regular doctor visits or sports physicals – there are plenty of simple ways parents can ensure their player’s wellbeing is taken care of before they step onto the court. Understanding when to take breaks and how best to manage stress levels will also be key in helping players reach peak performance during game time.

Encourage Communication And Self Advocacy

As a basketball parent, it is important to foster an environment of open dialogue and self-advocacy. An atmosphere that encourages communication and allows for players to give feedback will help young athletes grow in the sport. Here are some tips on how parents can encourage communication and self-advocacy with their child’s basketball team.

By listening to our children’s concerns, we can create an environment where they feel comfortable expressing themselves, both on and off the court. When we truly hear our child’s concerns and thoughts, we can try to reduce rushing to solve their challenge by starting with these statements after they share.  My own personal tendency is to skip this… and try to solve the problem with advice.   When they really needed an ear.

“I can imagine that was tough for you” or “I’m here for you”.

“I support you no matter what” or “I trust your decisions”.

When it comes to fostering teamwork skills in basketball players, there are a few key things parents can do to ensure their kids have the best chance for success. With the right guidance, tips, and encouragement from Mom and Dad, young players can gain invaluable knowledge of what it takes to be part of a successful team. Here are actionable tips that parents should consider when looking to foster better teamwork skills in their young athletes:

First and foremost, parents need to understand that true team play is often built over time. It’s important to encourage your child to get involved with the game by joining teams or clubs in the local community. This allows them an opportunity to practice working with others on a consistent basis and helps them learn how to interact with their peers more effectively.

Ask your child:  Who is your favorite teammate ever and why?  Dig a little deeper and ask why again?   Ask your child why they are a great teammate?  How do they want to enjoy being a great teammate this season?  What actions would they take?

5. The school dance or prom Many schools have dances, and parents can work with the coach to organize a night for the team to attend. If a prom is going on in the area, it can be a great opportunity for players to go together as a group.

6. The beach or pool. A game of sand volleyball (great for working explosiveness) , or a trip to the beach can provide a fun and relaxing environment for the players to get together for some fun.

7. Miniature Golf tournament, complete with green jacket from the thrift store.

For our family, we value effort.   To help guide and support (and occasionally offer feedback) we ask our kids to evaluate their effort on a scale of 1-10.   If their effort is in that 9-10 range, we think that is cause for celebration regardless of the win/loss or personal performance.

  7. If they say they want to be a three point shooter and have the green light from the coach, ask what are next best steps?
  8. What would be the actual daily habits you would have to form to earn the green light?
  9. What would you have to give up to perform those habits?
  10. Is it worth the sacrifice?
